Why the outline matters
Text on a photo has a problem: the background changes under every letter. Drag the background from black to white with no outline and watch the white text vanish. Then add an outline.

The numbers are WCAG contrast ratios, the measure web accessibility guidelines use: 4.5:1 is the minimum for body text, 3:1 for large text. Plain white text scores 21:1 on black but drops to about 1:1 on white. A black outline flips that: where the fill fails, the outline has near-maximum contrast, so every letter keeps a readable edge. That's why the look has survived since the early-2000s image macros, even though almost nobody picked Impact on purpose. It was simply the boldest font already installed on everyone's computer.
The same idea explains why subtitles on films use an outline or a shadow. Small visual details like that shape how we understand things, which is the spirit behind ahaboo, where you learn by adjusting things on screen rather than reading.
Using meme text well
- Top sets up, bottom pays off. In a classic image macro, the top line is the setup and the bottom line is the punchline.
- Fewer words, bigger letters. A caption has to read on a phone preview in a chat. The editor auto-sizes text to fill each box, so trimming words literally makes it larger.
- Use dark text on clean panels. Formats with a blank area, like the Drake template or the sign in Change My Mind, read better with plain black text, which is what the editor's "auto" colour does.
Meme font FAQ
What font do memes use?
Classic image macros use Impact, a condensed sans-serif designed by Geoffrey Lee in 1965 and shipped with Windows, in white capitals with a black outline. QuickMeme uses Anton, a free open-source font with the same condensed shape, so it renders the same on every phone.
Why is meme text white with a black outline?
Because it stays readable on any photo. White fill contrasts with dark areas and the black outline contrasts with light areas, so at every point the letters have a strong edge. Try the slider above: with an outline the worst-case contrast never drops below about 4.6:1.
Is Impact free to use?
Impact is a commercial font from Monotype that comes bundled with Windows and macOS. For web use or apps, free alternatives with the same look, such as Anton or Oswald, avoid licensing questions.
How do I make meme text with a transparent background?
Type in the generator above, choose colours and outline width, and press "Download transparent PNG". You can drop it on top of any video or image in another editor.
Why are modern memes in a different font?
Many newer formats (Twitter-style screenshots, Drake-style charts) use plain black sans-serif text on a white area, because they have a clean panel to write on. The outlined Impact look belongs to captions laid directly on top of a photo.
